The
Cultured Consumer: Facts about Argentina

Yerba
mate (pronounced as ma-tae)
is a species of holly native to
subtropical South America in northern Argentina,
Paraguay, Uruguay and southern Brazil.
Mate, a caffeinated herbal tea, is prepared by
steeping the dried leaves in hot water. Drinking mate
with friends from a shared hollow gourd (also called a
mate) with a metal straw (a bombilla) is an extremely
common social practice in Argentina. The name "mate"
derives from the quichua word "matí" that names the
gourd (Lagenaria vulgaris) that is traditionally used to
drink the infusion. It is used in popular medicine as a
stimulant to the central nervous system, a diuretic, and
an appetite suppressant.
